Four more added to Jersey team for Birmingham Games

8th April 2022 By Admin

The Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey (CGAJ) has today named four more competitors that will represent the Island this summer at Birmingham 2022.

The CGAJ Validation Group met this week to review the nominations that had been put forward by local sports governing bodies in this second selection phase of the Continuum Performance Pathway.

Cycling
Emily Bridson and Lisa Mansell will join the cycling team, racing in the women’s mountain bike cross country. Both have had an excellent series of races since the pandemic and have gained their elite licences. The two women are added to the four male cyclists selected in October 2021.

Athletics
The Validation Group added two athletes to the team. Katelyn Ridgway, presently studying at Oxford University, will run the marathon in Birmingham following her performance in the London event in 2021 and a series of excellent races since.

Zachary Saunders (pictured above) is the fourth addition to the Jersey squad, and will be running in the 100m and 200m track events. Zachary is based in New Zealand but his family are from Jersey, with his grandfather being CGAJ past President Martin Hebden. Zachary recently won the New Zealand Under-20 titles in both these events.

Continuum Pathway performance manager, Paul du Feu, said: “These four additions are exciting for everyone working with the pathway athletes. These events are not ones we’ve had many athletes compete in in recent Games.

“We’d like to congratulation Emily, Lisa, Katelyn and Zachary on their selection for the Birmingham Games and look forward to seeing them perform on the international stage proudly representing our Island.

“The Games is now just a few months away, but the Validation Group still have a number of decisions to make. In boxing and judo, for instance, there are some key events later this month and the panel deferred their decisions on athletes in these sports so that performances in those upcoming events can be taken into consideration.”
